Krav til forkunnskapar

30 ECST credits within mediarelated or other relevant studies. Documented practical skills of photography, and sufficient mastery of the English language to participate in dialogue lecturing. Admission will be based on study programs and a short letter of application stating your background and reason for applying, along with a portfolio of 10-15 of your own pictures; all in PDF-format. Applications are to be handed to the VUC Student Support Office by email: studentsorvis@hivolda.no. Please mark the application PDOC202. Students following media related study programs will be given priority.

Om emnet

The course focuses the ability to identify, predict and capture those decisive moments of time that tell stories. This will be done by concentrating on two given themes; “Helping Others” and “The Big Event”. Required equipment:Personal camera fit for documentary photography plus access to digital post-production of images and Internet connection.

Kunnskapar

- are able to work respectfully with people in sensitive situations and focus on describing relationships in a photographic way. Students will come to terms with seeking access to environments other than their own and build confidence in working closely with people of different age and culture.
- are able to make fast judgments about how, where and when to capture images of rapidly moving events. Success in this field demands a considerable degree of anticipation and preparedness, learnt through experience that will be offered on the course.

Praktisk organisering og arbeidsmåtar

The course is organized in three gatherings during the late part of the autumn semester. Teaching will be offered in the form of lectures, individual exercises to be performed in between the gatherings, and plenum discussions around student submitted presentations; based on given criteria as found in the reading list. VUC reserves non-commercial user rights to images submitted during the course.Individual guidance, in person or net-based, will be provided between the gatherings. Examination will take place at the end of the semester.

Vilkår for å framstille seg til eksamen

Each student must submit a portfolio of 12-15 images for each of the given themes, based on a one page story proposal to be submitted prior to the production of the portfolio.

All assessment and examination work must be done in english.
Final versions of the two portfolios will be assessed in relation to their story proposals and to a note of reflection (500 - 1000 words) about each of the portfolios.
