TOD106 From Ibsen to Fosse
Students must have completed 60 ECTS in the fine arts or humanities. A good command of English i essential.
This course is designed to provide an opportunity for International students to study Norwegian drama and culture in the country of its origin.
Students will study drama and litterature from the latter part of the nineteenth century up to the present day, i.e: Henrik Ibsen, Bjørnstjerne Bjørnson, Jesper Halle, Cecilie Løveid, Arne Lygre and Jon Fosse.
Some of the issues to be discussed are:
- female emancipation and sexuality
- individual freedom
- jealousy and desire
- power and abuse of power
In accordance with the National Qualifications Framework the student will achieve the following learning outcomes after completing the course:
The student:
- has knowledge of the main tendencies in the development of Norwegian literature and culture from 1850 to 2000.
- has in depth knowledge about a certain theme or author.
- has basic knowledge of critical theory, feminism and literary analysis.
The student:
- can formulate an independent set of arguments in relation to a particular aspect of the course, both orally and written.
- can analyze and discuss dramas and litterature in relation to different issues and values.
The student
- can present and discuss knowledge and meanings induvidually and in groups.
The course consists of:
- seminars and workshops.
- lectures.
- film viewings.
- play readings.
- work in groups and individually.
The course includes a days school trip at the students own expence.
Attendance:
The course requires an active participation, and has compulsory attendance.

Course work:
- An oral and/or artistic presentation in groups or individually, that addresses key themes taught on this course.
Grading will be done in accordance with the Regulations governing admission, studies and examinations at Volda University College.
The course will be evaluated according to the University College’s routines for quality assurance.
A range of different plays will be leanded out, and failure to hand them in will lead to a find of 200 nkr per play.
