Teacher training

The Faculty of Humanities and Education comprises of five institutes. They cover the areas of language and literature, religion and life views, pedagogy and teacher training, digital competence, and natural science and mathematics.

Long traditions

Volda University College has long tradition within teacher training. During the early 1920s, the teacher training education in Volda was the largest programme of its kind in Scandinavia. Today, the Faculty of Humanities and Education is still the largest faculty at VUC. The study programmes in the teacher training institute cover pre-school teacher training, primary and secondary education, and practical pedagogical training (PPU). Since 2019, the primary and lower secondary education is a 5-years integrated MA degree in Norway.

Details about new courses in English from spring 2024

Two new courses will be offered in English for international students starting in January 2024:

MGL-IDK Professional digital competence and Media Literacy (15 ECTS - BA level) 
This teacher education course will enable you to use, critically evaluate and create meaningful digital resources for learning purposes in different subject areas, through increased knowledge on professional digital competence and media literacy.

Credit load: 15 ECTS
BA level - no prerequirements

NB! This course can be combined with BA courses for international students but also with the 15 ECTS MA course for international and local students: MGL5-10EN3C Digital Learning and Assessment in English (60 ECTS in English as prerequisite).

MGL5-10EN3C Digital Learning and Assessment in English (15 ECTS - MA level - 60 ECTS in English as prerequisite).
The course seeks to strengthen students’ professional pedagogical competence through the use of digital technologies and assessment methods in teaching and learning. An overarching goal is for students to become competent, critical, and creative leaders for students’ learning in English within a digital school environment. The course provides in-depth insights into identifying, analysing, and critically reflecting on the possibilities and challenges related to the use of digital technology in students’ learning processes in English.

MA level - 60 ECTS in English prerequired

Most of the courses are offered in Norwegian language. Scandinavian students, coming from other teacher training educations, are eligible for Norwegian-taught courses. All the applications to Norwegian-taught courses are assessed individually. Please contact the International Office for further details.
