Information for International Employees

International employees

Norwegian offical authorities have developed an official guide about working in Norway. We recommend you to study this guide.

Visa and work permits

  • As a rule, you need an entry visa to come to Norway, however there are exceptions to this requirement. Check if you need a visa and conditions of the visa at www.udi.no.
  • We also recommend the website EURAXESS Norway (euraxess.no) provided by the Norwegian Reseach Council (NRC).

For the steps you need to undertake upon arrival in Norway, see information on registration with Norwegian authorities.

Registration with the police

If you have applied for a residence/work permit through a Norwegian foreign service mission abroad (www.norway.info) you must register in person at the local police station within seven days of arriving in Norway. You need to bring:

  • Passport
  • Work agreement from Volda University College.

Check this website for information about registration with the police.

Registration at the tax office

To work in Norway you need a Norwegian tax deduction card. Tax deduction cards are only given if you have a Norwegian identity number. Unfortunately this requires that you meet in person at a tax office to identify yourself. You need to bring:

·         Valid id document (passport).

·         Completed application for a tax deduction card.

·         Work agreement from Volda University College.

Tax offices for ID validation

You also need to go to a tax office for ID validation as soon as possible after your arrival in Norway. You also need to apply for a tax deduction card. This process normally takes a few weeks.

The nearest tax offices for ID validation is Ålesund, Ulsteinvik (only Wednesday) and Nordfjordeid.

The Norwegian Tax Administration have developed an English guide for foreign workers where you can find the information you need.

Tax deduction card

Employers in Norway are obliged to deduct taxes from wages before employees are
paid. If work is started without a tax card, we are obliged to deduct 50 % tax.

Opening a bank account

To open a bank account in Norway you need a national identity number.

Bring the following documents to the branch of the bank you wish to open an account:

  • National ID-number
  • Passport
  • Work Agreement
