FLM101 Introduction to film history

The course will present some excerpts from film history and films central to these. Each semester will deal with different themes/era and the films included will be balanced between animation, documentary and fiction. The course will stimulate the students to further explore film history.

In accordance with the National Qualifications Framework the student will have following learning outcome after completing the course:
After completing the course the students will:
- have a basic knowledge of film history and the themes discussed.
- have a basic knowledge of film theory relevant to the screened films.
- have knowledge of the context surrounding the screened films and be able to place them in a historical and esthetical context.
After completing the course the students will:
- be able to reflect upon a film's place in society and film history.
- be able to write about film, and apply relevant theory in this writing.
The students will have seen some important films from the history of cinema, and have a theoretical fundament to further view films with a critical and observant eye.
Weekly screenings with an introduction by the lecturer.
Grading will be done in accordance with the Regulations governing admission, studies and examinations at Volda University College.
The course will be evaluated in accordance with the University College's routines for quality assurance.

The student can choose to include a photo, music or other media. The text and attachments will reflect on the historical and esthetical context of the film. It will be given one final grade.
