Krav til forkunnskapar

The students must have completed 60 ECTS in Theatre and Drama, Animation or other relevant education before taking this course. A sufficient mastery of the English language to participate in dialogue based lecturing is required. Admission will be based on study programs where 10 places are reserved for theatre students, 10 places are reserved for Animation students and the remaining 10 places are reserved for qualified students from the exchange programs. If there are open places in this course they are open to other qualified students.

Om emnet

Writing scripts for different media is a growing industry, and this course focuses on different ways of writing scripts for stage and screen. The students will work on:

  • Adaptation theories and practices.
  • Dramaturgy.
  • Idea development and pitching.
  • Constructing characters and plot.
  • Writing dialogue.

In accordance with the National Qualifications Framework the student will achieve the following learning outcomes after completing the course:

Kunnskapar

The student

  • has basic knowledge of selected theories of adaptation and dramaturgy.
  • has knowledge of key processes within script writing for stage and screen.
  • has basic knowledge of selected models and methods in literary analysis, adaptation analysis and film analysis.
Ferdigheiter

The student

  • can write short scripts for stage and different media, from idea to finished script, alone and in groups.
  • can formulate the differences and similarities between a written text and the adapted form, orally and in written form.
Generell kompetanse

The student

  • can participate in debates on adaptations and scripts.
Praktisk organisering og arbeidsmåtar

The classes will consist of a variety of teaching methods, both in groups and individually:

  • seminars
  • workshops
  • lectures
  • reading groups
  • film viewing
  • compulsory readings aloud for an external audience at House theatres.

The teacher will have a special focus on individual guidance to help the students in their script writing. The course will have several guest teachers from both Norway and abroad, who are specialists in different ways of adaptation and script writing.

Vilkår for å framstille seg til eksamen
  • The course has compulsory attendance of an active and engaged character. To qualify for the final exam the student has to have an attendance of a minimum of 80%.

  • A reflection on an adaptation of choice (1500 words) in groups.
  • Three short scripts (800-1000 words each).
