Staging cultural histories; something for you?

The course is offered for both Norwegian and international students, and the teaching will be given in English. It is a 200-level course which gives 15 ects.
Students must have completed the first year of a bachelor degree in the fine arts or humanities, and a good command of English is essential.

During the course, students will study the literature and theatre of one of the most significant and fascinating periods in Norwegian cultural history, namely the period between 1870 and 1914.
Norwegian authors such as Henrik Ibsen, Amalie Skram, Bjørnstjerne Bjørnson, Knut Hamsun, Arne and Hulda Garborg, Dagny Juel Przybyszewska and Ragnhild Jølsen will be on the reading list. These authors discussed controversial issues such as female emancipation, prostitution, female sexuality, jealousy and desire with an intensity and boldness that were unprecedented in most other countries.

Students will explore the contentious issues raised in the literature of the period through a wide variety of drama and theatre methods and critical theories. The theoretical study will be paralleled by an exploratory performative process, which will be documented in a student production. Do you think this would be an interesting course for you to study?
