Om emnet

The students will gain an insight into what guiding and outdoor leadership involves in practice, and thereby lay the foundation for studying, reflecting on, and discussing the role of a guide, guiding activity as a travel and nature tourism product, communicating information and experiences, and safe guiding. Guiding activities and outdoor leadership will be exemplified and themed through guided tours and events in the mountains, along the fjords, and in coastal environments.

Kunnskapar

The student

  • will have acquired an awareness of the systematic knowledge approach to nature, culture, and traditional use of land and natural resources in the coastal-, fjord- and mountain landscapes on which the course focuses
  • will have gained knowledge and awareness of the responsibilities and regulations governing the role of nature guide / outdoor leader with responsibility for the safety of individuals and groups.
  • will have acquired an awareness of one’s own and the participants' capabilities concerning moving and navigating in different natural environments in all situations and conditions in summer and autumn.
  • will have acquired a knowledge of meteorological conditions to be able to plan and carry out tours with groups in an appropriate manner
  • will have knowledge of nutrition, traditional food, and meals as part of a guided product.

The student

  • will have extensive skills in critical risk assessments and can carry out safe and environmentally friendly guiding / outdoor leadership in nature- and culture environments in summer and autumn with participants
  • will have skills in disseminating information and conveying experiences, nature, culture, and traditional use of land and natural resources to the participants in guiding / outdoor leadership contexts.
  • will have skills in planning, organizing, leading, and evaluating guided tours and events during the summer and autumn seasons.
  • can use digital technology related to nature guiding / outdoor leadership contexts.
Generell kompetanse

The student

  • will have developed knowledge and competence to work independently as a guide / outdoor leader in coastal-, fjord- and mountain landscapes, on which the course focuses.
  • will have an awareness of the boundary line between guiding and pedagogical activities in a natural environment
  • will have developed a capacity for reflection and common sense and the ability to implement best practices
Praktisk organisering og arbeidsmåtar

The course of study will alternate between teaching with lectures, discussions in plenary and seminars, group work, teaching programmes outdoors, individual study and digital studies.   

The student’s impressions, observations and experiences from the activities outdoors are to provide a basis for discussions and reflections. The programme of study presupposes active participation, where the students are also given responsibility for organizing and for guiding assignments as part of various teaching projects.

Vilkår for å framstille seg til eksamen

Attendance requirements

Approved attendance and active participation in compulsory teaching, including preparations for, during, and after the outdoor teaching projects. 80% attendance is required in all compulsory teaching, and 90% attendance is required in all compulsory teaching programs outdoors. The semester plan specifies the scope of the compulsory teaching.

Coursework requirements

  • Completed digital learning module in mountain orientation and navigation
  • Approved oral presentation of a project on nature and culture
  • Approved skill tests and capacity related to leading groups safely and environmentally friendly in natural and cultural landscapes during the summer and autumn seasons.

The student can answer coursework requirements either in English or a Scandinavian language (Norwegian, Danish, Swedish).

Materialavgift

Communal supplies: 
All students, also international students, must pay a fee of NOK 400 for communal supplies used in this course. This is a one-time fee which covers the entire semester.
