International students celebrate 17th May
Norwegian Constitution Day is the most important national celebration. Every 17th May children, pupils, students, parade together with representatives from various clubs, organizations and groups. Lead by fanfare, marching proudly trough lines of people energetically waving flags, thousands show their pride of being Norwegians.
Part of the annually 17th May parade in Volda is also the University College. This year, as the years before, many of the international students joined the group and enthusiastically experienced the Norwegian National Day.
There were two processions: in the morning, the so-called “children’s’ train” and in the afternoon, the peoples’ parade. After the second march reached the center of Volda, international students were invited to celebrate the day in Nabolaget, a volunteer-run cafeteria, situated right in the heart of Volda.
Traditional cakes, soft drinks and mini concert
They were met by locals wearing “bunad”, the national costume, and received firsthand information about traditions, customs and typical outfits. After a short history lesson given by Kjell Holby, international coordinator for the Faculty of Humanities and Education, the international students tasted the typical Kransekake, marzipan based cake and enjoyed artistic moment by two brilliant pupils from Volda Vidaregåande skule.
