Praise and awards for the media master

Master in Media Practices at Volda University College has exam productions that win international awards and the students themselves boast of the broad media subject environment where they learn from each other.

The unique thing about Master in Media Practices is all the different professions that meet. People with different backgrounds from the media world meet in an international environment.

In Volda, journalists, communicators, animators, photographers, documentary filmmakers and designers meet to take the master's degree.

Unprecedented possibilities

This is something the students really appreciate, confirms German Daniel Struwe.

- What I think is good about this master, is that it gives us the opportunity to meet people from different media directions and that we can share our experiences and knowledge. It gives us the opportunity to learn not only from our teachers, but also from each other.

In his master's thesis, Struwe created a documentary photography project from an environmental perspective.

- What I really like is that our tasks are almost not limited at all. For example, I was in Saint Martin, Caribbean, to carry out a project on the consequences of global warming.

Guest lecturers

The teaching in the master’s programme is given by professionals with different media backgrounds. To get the edge and the latest knowledge from the industry, skilled professionals who work in the industry also come to Volda as guest lecturers.

- The professional feedback we received from the teachers was very helpful, and we also have the opportunity to get financial support for the master's project, Struwe says.

Shown at 30 festivals 

Large parts of final year, the students spend on their master's thesis. For that, you can make a production such as a film, photo series or website, accompanied with a theoretical part. Or one can choose to create a pure written master's thesis.

Several of the exam productions from students at Master in Media Practices have won prizes and awards nationally and internationally. Margrethe Danielsen's animated film is one of these. In the film, which in October 2020 was shown at over 30 different festivals around the world, we meet three couples who experience separation. Danielsen has used clay figures to depict this in a good way.

Danielsen received honorable mention during the international animation festival in Zagreb, and during the Fredrikstad Animation Festival she won the award for best Nordic-Baltic student film. Below you can see the trailer for Pearl Diver:
 

Become a better photographer

For his master’s thesis, Indian Kishore Gajendra documented the working conditions of the employees of large factories in their home country India that produce clothes for European brands.

He has received much praise for the good and important work.

- I got a glimpse of the world of the complicated documentary and the impact it can have on society. I also got to explore my camera to the fullest and become a better photographer, says Gajendra.

- The perfect place

Another example of a master production that has made a big impact, is Maria Otterlei's over half an hour long documentary about Norwegian Rescue Dogs. She follows the specially trained dogs and their handlers who will find missing people in Norwegian nature.

Otterlei has followed dogs in nature on Sunnmøre, an area also the German student Daniel Struwe has fallen in love with. He is happy that Volda became his choice when he was to take a master's degree.
