Semester start at VUC
The new academic year 2011/2012 was opened on the 16th of August with a one minute's silence moment, in the memory of the victims of the terror attack in Oslo and Utøya, 22nd of July.
In a packed canteen, students, guests and staff gathered for the opening ceremony. A rememberance moment for the deceased in Oslo and Utøya on the 22nd July was organized, together with greetings, musical performances and a speech by the university colleges' new rector, Mr. Per Halse.
In his speech, the rector Per Halse mentioned the origins of education in Norwegian language: - Requirements for efficiency and market adaptation may come into conflict with traditional, universal ideals, such as academic freedom, wide orientation and personal wisdome. Various tests and ranking usually focus on what is easily measured and counted. But what about human growth and development of identity? What about the love for the others and democracy?
Chairman of the Student Association, Eivind Nævdal-Bolstad and rector Peter Halse prepared a touching moment to comemorate the victims of 22nd July. Eivind Nævdal-Bolstad lost one of his best friends on Utøya.
Malin Ørsal and musicians from the student band Fatty Sunroad played "My little country" by Ole Paus.
At Volda University College there were admitted 230 more students than last year.
