SOUTH AFRICA

After the historic democratic elections in 1994, one of the first task that
the new government was faced with was the development of a schooling
system which was in line with the principles of democracy and non-
racialism and the provision of skilled and resourceful people to
rebuild the country's economy. This was no easy task. In this
presentation this development will be traced and commented on. In
particular, the new school curriculum will be discussed and illustrated
with examples from very elementary mathematics.
