Om emnet

This course discusses the mutual relations between media, their professions, and the society of our time. The course first addresses the contemporary media development and how different media converge. Then it discusses how this development influences the media professions and production practice. The course also develops a society perspective on contemporary media, including media ethics, sustainability, and the role of media in today's risk society.

The student has

  • advanced knowledge of legitimation, norms, ethics and autonomy in relation to her/his own and others’ exercise of roles
  • advanced knowledge of relevant professional theory and thorough understanding of the various social tasks that exist in the various professions in the media industry
  • a thorough knowledge of how current media developments, such as digitalization and interdisciplinarity, challenge the roles, norms and ethics of media workers.

The student

  • can reflect on and analyze her/his own and others’ application of roles and independently show further development of their role understanding in the face of other media professions
  • has developed a critical media awareness in which one sees her/his own professional practice in a broader context
  • can find and use theories for a critical discussion and analysis of various role understandings and practices linked to media, social development, culture and technology.
  • can understand and analyze the tension between occupational boundaries and development (boundary work)
Generell kompetanse

The student

  • has a thorough understanding of her/his own professional practice and societal role. This includes knowledge of both similarities and differences towards other media professions and their practitioners role understandings and practices.

Teaching is in the form of lectures and seminars.

Vilkår for å framstille seg til eksamen

Work requirements:

1. Write and deliver a first draft of an academic essay using writing conventions and standards for scholarly publishing (between 1000 and 2000 words). The topic should be one of the main subjects of the course.

2. Fill out the evaluation form for the course (done anonymously).
