ANI121 Animation 1: Basics of animation - 2D/cartoons
Course content

Through the course, the students will specialize in a self-chosen technique (2D, stop-motion, or 3D computer animation), and at the same time gain experience in making a complete short film that tells a story or otherwise expresses something meaningful.

The students will first develop an idea, and structure the film based on principles of storytelling. Students should show awareness of narrative and stylistic conventions, which they have learned about in the two previous semesters, but at the same time have room to explore their own ideas. Through the work with the film production, the students will receive further training in the animation technique they have chosen, and there will be teaching sessions that support this training.

The course also consists of a small project in the second part of the semester, where students can experiment completely freely. Here, students can choose to experiment with the traditional techniques they have been introduced to or choose to explore alternative techniques and approaches to animation, such as sand animation, pixelation, scraping on film, etc.

Learning outcome

In accordance with the national qualifications framework, the student must have the following learning outcomes after completing the study program:

Learning outcome knowledge

The students must have advanced knowledge of:

  • a chosen animation technique (2D, stop-motion, or 3D computer animation)
  • how this technique can be used in the production and exploration of ideas and storytelling

The student must have basic knowledge of:

  • how to experiment in the animation medium with or beyond the traditional techniques
Learning outcome skills

The students must

  • have advanced skills in a chosen animation technique (2D, stop-motion, or 3D computer animation)
  • be able to produce an animated short film with sound
  • be able to create their own puppet for stop-motion puppet animation (if this technique is chosen)
  • be able to create their own 3D model for computer animation (if this technique is chosen)
  • be able to experiment with animation
Learning outcome qualification

Students should be able to:

  • work in a group on an animation project
  • think creatively and be able to improvise
  • use animation to create and explore ideas and tell a story
Working and learning activities

The students are taught short film production and technique and work from this themselves with animated film production. The work takes place both in groups and alone. During the semester, students must have completed:
