Course content

The core of this course is how to tell animated stories and direct an animated short film. The course will present on advancedlevel how to develop the story and how to use the language of the animated film to communicate the film story. Dramaturgy, cinematography, mise en scène, concept- and character design, editing and the use of sound and music in animated films are central issues.

The course will end with the creation of an animatic (filmed storyboard with sound) for an animated short film. The course will be given in English and is open to international students with a BA in animation.

The curriculum will be presented through lectures, seminars and group discussions. The students will work individually on their synopsis/storyboard/animatic. Individual supervision on this practical work will be given.   

Assessment requirements

During the first month of the course the students shall present a synopsis for an animated short film (350-400 words). After discussions with teachers and fellow students, the synopsis should be developed into a storyboard.

Script/storyboard/production plan and budget for the film shall be presented no later than November 1st. The project must be endorsed by the course leader before further work on the project can follow.

Animated Short Film + Written Report:
Students shall present an animatic (filmed storyboard with sound) based on the synopsis and storyboard made during the course. The students are encouraged to relate the animatic to their short film production course Directing and Producing.
For the report the students shall explain the choices made according to storytelling, editing and use of sound. Synopsis and storyboard shall be included in the report and the student should reflect on the process from idea to animatic.
The assessment and report must be done in english.
