Cultural Encounters
Objectives
Cultural Encounters is an interdisciplinary research group where the members have various backgrounds including religious studies, history and anthropology. The research group work with issues related to encounters between people with different cultural and religious backgrounds. How have such encounters unfolded within different contexts in history? How do they take place in different contexts today? In addition, the research group addresses general issues related to the humanities, the place and role of history and religion in society.
The academic goal of the group is both to stimulate the individual researcher through discussion of manuscripts, and to initiate joint projects around cultural encounters. The research group is organizing a manuscript seminar, where both new and experienced researchers can present drafts and ongoing work during the writing process. In addition, we organize workshops and seminars. The members' article manuscripts, proceedings from workshops, seminars and conferences have been and are continuously published in journals, anthologies and books.
Many of the members contribute to the master's program «Cultural encounters», - a collaboration between the Department of History and the Department of Religion and Philosophy at Volda University College. Master's students and Ph.D. students are included in the research group's activities. The research group also invites international and national guest researchers to give presentations and lectures.
