European Union and regional development

Why was the EU created? How does it work? What does it mean for Norway to be outside the European Union? These are some of the questions students will learn about in this course. Students get insight into relevant policy areas, especially regional development, which aims at fostering development in less prosperous regions of the EU. They will also learn about theories that explain why there are differences in development in the first place, and how these can be reduced. Discussions about up-to-date topics like the effects of Brexit and the EU’s handling of the Corona crisis, as well a study trip to a member country of the European Union ensure that students get lots of practical insights. The 15-credit version of course also covers economic and other development issues in Norway, which gives international students a good opportunity to learn more about their host country.

Internship course

In the spring term students can take an internship course. Classes are held in January and February and prepare students for their internships with topics like how to apply for jobs and working in a different cultural environment, among others. The course also prepares students for writing their internship report, in which students not only describe their internship experience, but also explore a topic related to their internship. The second part of the course is an internship in the public or private sector, or with an NGO. Students get support in finding an internship position.
