Required prerequisite knowledge

120 ECTS in the Arts (Music, Theatre, Dance or Visual Art) or a Media discipline (Film or Photography). A sufficient mastery of the English and Norwegian languages to participate in dialogue based lecturing.

Course content

The term teaching artist (TA) refers to a professional artist working within arts in education and/or arts in the community. A teaching artist may work on their own or be engaged in part time positions at art institutions and cooperate directly with teachers and staff in the institutions they work in.

This course will focus on how to develop TA-programs that include and relates to professional art productions, as well as aesthetic learning processes in the classroom, afterschool community programs.The course will also focus on how to establish TA-programs in cooperation with the teachers in school and/or other specialists in community institutions.

  • using theoretical knowledge and artistic methods to explore and support art making and learning in their art or media discipline     
  • how to work as a teaching artist and be responsible for planning, leading and evaluating a TA-program    
  • make use of relevant method and practices when working in a classroom or community setting

  • how to build creative partnership involving an art institution and/or a community institution
  • how to create and perform a teaching artist program
Working and learning activities

The coursework has compulsory attendance. The work will involve the students working in groups of varying sizes as well as in individual work, and the teaching will be offered in a variety of forms, such as practical/artistic work, seminars, lectures, project work, performances, self-study, mentoring. Students use ICT as a tool in connection with both the practical and theoretical components.

The teaching artist course includes 

  • three compulsary assemblies, one of which is 4-5 day excursion to study teaching artist program 
  • the planning and performance of a teaching artist program in an institution

The students will have to establish a binding agreement in cooperation with an arts institution and/or a community institution for their teaching artist program, and he/she will be assigned a mentor during the development and completion of their program.

 

Assessment requirements

Eligibility for taking the final exam

  • planning and performing a teachinga artist program in cooperation with an institution
  • an oral presentation
  • a written assignment

The coursework has compulsary attendance. (See: Regulations governing studies and examinations is to be found at Volda University College, §7.3 on attendance/participation in teaching.)

Evaluation

The course will be evaluated in accordance to VUC’s routines for quality assurance.
