B2 level  / Good command of written and spoken English as well as basic knowldge of English grammar. 

Course content

The course provides a basic introduction to English grammar and lexicology, with emphasis on syntax, morphology, vocabulary, and the relations between grammar and meaning. It provides students with the terminology necessary to analyse and apply English grammar and lexicology in use as they learn to identify, analyse, and describe the structure of the English language. Students also gain insights into how grammar contributes to meaning. The knowledge acquired in the course is useful in many fields of work such as education, culture work, media, administration and travel life.

In accordance with the national qualification framework, the student will have acquired the following learning outcomes upon completing the course:

Upon completing the course, the student will have knowledge about:

-  central concepts within English lexicology and word formation

- basic English syntax

- the relations between language structure and meaning

- English dictionaries and other relevant digital language-learning resources

Upon completing the course, the student will be able to:

- identify and analyse elements of English language usage on different grammatical levels

- reflect on the effect of a variety of grammatical structures

- use their knowledge about English grammar to improve their English language usage

- analyse and discuss the use of words in English and their relation to meaning and style

- use English dictionaries and other relevant digital language-learning resources

Learning outcome qualification

Upon completing the course, the student will be able to:

 - use grammatically correct English in practical situations

- use linguistic knowledge and skills with some degree of independence, reflection, and critical thinking

- use appropriate terminology to analyse, describe and interpret the structure of English texts  

- use knowledge acquired to produce texts in English with understanding of their structure

Working and learning activities

Teaching is scheduled on a weekly basis. It takes the form of lectures, exercises, pair/group work and individual study. 

Assessment requirements

In order to be eligible to sit the exam, the student must:

1. Attend and participate actively in at least 75% of the scheduled classes.

2. Pass three assignments - one group oral presentation and two individual assignments - within set deadlines. The nature, length and structure of each will be posted on Canvas at the start of the semester. If an assignment is not approved the first time, the student or group will be given a second chance to complete it, normally within two working days. 

 

Evaluation system

Exams will be assessed in accordance with Regulations for admissions, studies and exams at Volda University College, § 5-11
