Required prerequisite knowledge

The course is open to students in the BA in media production program and students in media production, communication and marketing, journalism, and outdoor life studies. Students in the BA-program in media production have priority.  

Admission is based on the following prerequisites:  

  • 60 credits from relevant studies in media production, marketing, journalism, photography, and/or outdoor life.
  • Documented basic skills in photography and/or video production
  • Motivation application
  • Study participation requires good knowledge of the English language

Students must be able to participate in day trips in the outdoors, carrying a backpack and equipment.  

Although the university college has camera equipment that you may book for college work, we encourage students to have access to their own system camera with still photography and video capabilities suitable for on location media production work. Also, students must have clothing, boots and personal outdoor gear appropriate for hiking and outdoor work. A list of recommended clothing, outdoor gear and equipment will be provided upon admission. 

Course content

Do you enjoy being outside in nature, taking part in outdoor activities, and producing media content? Are you interested in learning how to produce media content for promoting outdoor life, outdoor activities, or marketing tourist destinations?  

In this course, students explore the interaction between mediated communication and its representations of outdoor activities and experiences. The course supplies students with knowledge and skills to effectively identify and communicate activities and experiences in the outdoors through video and photography.

In accordance with the National Qualifications Framework the student will have achieved the following learning outcomes after completing the course: 

Learning outcome knowledge

The student will acquire knowledge about 

  • how to create narratives about nature and outdoor activities with video and photography  
  • how to operate and select video and photography equipment suitable for different outdoor situations 
  • understanding and following safety procedures and risk assessments for both people and equipment in various outdoor situations 
Learning outcome skills

The student will acquire skills in 

  • producing narratives about nature and outdoor activities with video and photography 
  • deciding and choosing appropriate storytelling techniques for the content format  
  • carrying out risk assessments, and handle equipment in various situations in a safe manner

The student will gain competence in 

  • producing video and photo-based content in an outdoor environment   
  • team and group work, and organizational skills 
Working and learning activities

The course will consist of different work methods including lectures, workshops, hikes/trips, practical exercises, self-study, individual work, and group work.  There will be organized trips in the local region during the semester. There can be different trips every year.  Parts of the program can be implemented as e-learning modules and screen-based teaching and guidance.  

The course will be taught in English if there are exchange students participating.   

Assessment requirements
  1. Producing two media productions, both with a given theme, format and purpose. Both media productions to be accompanied by an individual report of 1000 words each (+/- 10%). The media products may be produced in groups or individually, depending on the specifics of each assignment. Written work requirements may be written in Norwegian or English.  
  2. Submitting an evaluation form of the course (done anonymously) 

All assignments must be handed in and approved by the deadlines given.
