Applications for the Master in Media Practices are now being accepted by Volda University College. You'll be a part of an international group of lecturers and students from different fields of media in this study programme.

The different media plattforms and professions are converging more and more, and so are the industries. This implies that skill and competence is also valued to a higher extent. Students with backgrounds in journalism, film and media production, communication, and animation come together through the Master in Media Practices programme.

Customise your own degree

The master's degree will provide advanced knowledge of the media industry and give you specialized insight into a limited area of the field. The education creates a common learning environment for media students where different professional areas meet through common subjects that are relevant for all types of practioners.

As a student, you can cusomise your master's degree with subjects according to your background. The entry requirement is a bachelor's degree in media and communications or equivalent international qualifications as deemed acceptable by the University College. Practical and theoretical master's thesis

In their final year, students are required to write a master's thesis that they then orally defend. Students can decide for themselves whether they wish to produce a ordinary academic written master's thesis or a practical media production combined with a written assignment.

Examples of productions that students have made as part of their master's thesis are animated film, documentary film, photo documentary, advertising film, websites, design for websites, information film, communication plan with exercises and content strategies.

As part of the master's, it is also possible to have eight to ten weeks of practice in a media company that is relevant to your field of study.

Recognized for its media educational environment

The lectures are thought in English and is given by professionals with a broad media background. The university college also brings in specialist expertise through guest lecturers from the industries, who can convey knowledge about the best and latest practice in working life. Volda University College has the largest media education environment in Norway and has educated professionals since 1971. The college also has a close relationship with the various media industries in Norway and abroad.

Master in Media Practices takes place in state-of-the-art premises in the new media building at the Volda University College, which opened in 2021. Here, you will have the oppurtunity to excel in one of the country's best educational facilities for the media subjects. You will also have the opportunity to borrow the latest equipment that you need to carry out for a media production.

Application and deadlines

For applicants with citizenship and education background outside Norway/EU/EEA and with visa requirement, the application deadline is 1 March.

For applicants residing in Norway with a Norwegian ID number, or citizens of EU/EEA countries, the application deadline is 15 April.

Please take note: the Norwegian government has proposed to introduce tuition fees for students outside EU/EEA countries. The final details are yet to be provided. You can follow the situation here.
