Bolk

All literature excerpts that are copied for use as reading list material must be cleared in accordance with the Kopinor Agreement. This is done in Bolk, which offers solutions for both copyright clearance and making compendia.

Volda University College policy states that digital compendia must be for student use only. In Bolk, you can find digital content from both Norwegian and international titles. If the excerpt you need is not available in Bolk, you can scan it and upload pdf files to the compendium in Bolk yourself.

Do All Excerpts Have to Go Through Bolk?

  • Book chapters: Yes, these must get copyright clearance in Bolk. The most practical method is to collect all chapters for one subject into a single digital compendium.
  • Journal articles in electronic format: No, just include a full text link to the article in your reading list. No rights clearance required.
  • Journal articles in paper/hard copy: If you want to include the article in a digital compendium, you can scan the article and upload the pdf to Bolk. Note that it is not permitted to use more than one article from a given journal issue per subject. You can also directly upload the pdf to Canvas.

Getting Started

You can access Bolk using your Feide login details but must be registered as a HVO user at first. Send Bente Gunn Lien an email with your name, faculty, and mobile phone number to get registered.

The library has made a detailed guide for using Bolk: <link coming soon>

It’s smart to get started early. Securing copyright clearance can take time if for example the book isn’t already registered in Bolk, or your excerpt exceeds 15%.

Help

The course coordinator must take responsibility for securing copyright clearance and completing compendia. If you get stuck, you can get help both from the library and/or the contact person in your faculty. Bolk also offers user support.
