Two-factor authentication with mobile app
Enabling two-factor authentication with the Microsoft Authenticator App follows three steps.
- Install the app on your phone
- Perform the registration process on your PC
- Connect the app on your mobile to your Microsoft account
The screenshots as shown in this manual were taken on a Windows PC. There may be slight variations on a Mac.
References to menu selections etc. in the Microsoft Authenticator app come from the Android version of the app. There may be slight variations on iOS.
Note that the registration process may start automatically when you try to log in to a service. You will then be asked to provide information about yourself. Click on "Next" and follow the instructions.
Otherwise, you can start the process yourself by following the points below.
1 - Install the app on your phone
On your mobile phone, download and install the Microsoft Authenticator app. You can download it from Google Play on Android phones and from the App Store on iOS phones.
2 - Perform the registration process on your PC
- On PC, log in to this page: https://aka.ms/mfasetup
Do the configuration as shown here: - In the dialog as shown above, click on the "Configure Authenticator app" button
- On your PC you will see a dialog like this:
3 - Connect the app on your mobile to your Microsoft account
- On your mobile, open the Authenticator app. When you run the app for the first time, a wizard will appear and you select "Add job or school account". (You may need to select "Add account" first). Then select "Scan QR code".
If you have used the app before in other contexts, you can add more accounts by selecting "Add account" under the menu in the top right corner. - Scan the QR code you have on your PC screen. Your HVO account will now automatically connect to the app. (Important: Do not scan the QR code in the image above in the manual here, but in the dialog that you see on your own PC.)
- On your PC, click "Next" just below the QR code to test. This dialog will then appear on your PC:
- You will receive a notification on your phone. Click "Approve" .
- On your PC, remember to click "Save" at the end. You will be notified that your settings have been changed and saved, and you usually get a new notification on your phone that you have to approve after pressing "Save".
Two-factor authentication is now enabled for your account.
Tip: In the Microsoft Authenticator app, open the "Settings" menu option. There is a setting called "App Lock". If this setting is turned on, you must enter the screen lock before you receive a notification from Authenticator when you log in.
