Course content

Figure drawing provides an introduction to basic knowledge of human proportion, anatomy, movement and composition. The main goal of the course is to provide students with knowledge of, and practice in, drawing based on principles of linear construction. The understanding of linear construction prepares the students for more complex problems in Figure drawing 2 and 3.

Learning outcome

In accordance with the national qualifications framework, students will have the following learning outcomes after completing the course:

Learning outcome knowledge

Students will have basic knowledge of

  • how to draw the human body
  • proportions, movement and composition
  • how the human body can be reduced to simple geometric shapes
  • how drawing can be used to communicate
  • theoretical concepts in relation to drawing
Learning outcome skills

Students will have basic skills in

  • drawing a nude model
  • principles of composition, proportions, and linear construction in drawing
  • using drawing to interpret visual experiences
Learning outcome qualification

Students will

  • have knowledge of basic concepts in drawing
  • have the competence to solve drawing tasks within a set time limit
  • have improved their drawing skills, helping them to acquire animation skills in other contexts
  • be able to use drawing in practical problem solving
Working and learning activities

The course is organized with practical exercises where students draw a nude model. This is supplemented by a theoretical part where students get basic knowledge of anatomy, proportions, movement and composition.

When students draw a live nude model, their approach will depend on their individual skill level and their pace of progression. A teacher will guide them through their individual problem solving.

Lectures will be held in Norwegian, but foreign students will be taught in English.

At the end of the semester, the student, together with a supervisor, selects drawing assignments that are submitted in a portfolio exam.
