For english speaking exchange students: Admission for exchange students is based exclusively on portfolio assessment. All exchange students must submit a link to their online portfolio, together with the application documents.
Figure drawing focuses on developing and strengthening the student's drawing skills with an emphasis on gesture drawing as a foundation for animation. Through weekly sessions, the student will practice drawing the human body, training in the understanding of anatomy, form, movement, and composition. The course encourages independent practice with guidance and feedback during class, and is designed to maintain continuous drawing practice throughout the semester.
In accordance with the national qualifications framework, students will have the following learning outcomes after completing the course:
The student will have basic knowledge of
- drawing the human body
- proportions, movement, and composition
- how the human body can be reduced to simple geometric shapes
- how drawing can be used for communication
- theoretical concepts in relation to drawing
The student will have basic skills in
- drawing from a life model
- principles of composition, proportions, and linear construction in drawing
- using drawing to interpret visual experiences
The student will
- have knowledge of basic concepts in drawing
- have the competence to solve drawing tasks within a set timeframe
- have improved drawing skills, which will assist in acquiring animation skills in other contexts
- be able to use drawing in practical problem-solving
The course is organized around practical exercises where the student draws from a life model. This is supplemented by a theoretical component covering basic knowledge of anatomy, proportions, movement, and composition.
When the student draws from a live model, the approach will depend on their individual skill level and pace of progression. A teacher will guide them through their individual problem-solving process.
Lectures will be held in Norwegian, but international students will receive instruction in English.
At the end of the semester, the student, together with the supervisor, will select 5 major drawing assignments to be submitted for the portfolio exam.
Deliver an evaluation of the course. This evaluation will be conducted anonymously.
Grading will be done in accordance with the Regulations governing studies and examinations at Volda University College, § 5-11.
The course will be evaluated in accordance with Volda University College’s quality assurance system.
Students are responsible to provide the following basic equipment: charcoal, kneaded eraser and fixative. Additionally, they will need ink, watercolour, or some other desired medium. Other necessary equipment is provided by the school.
