ANI161 Animation 1: Basics of animation - 2D/cartoons

This course provides an introduction to the basic animation principles in drawn animation. Through short exercises, students will learn about the fundemental tools of the animation craft. They will be introduced to technologies and tools for animation production, and learn how to visualize ideas through storyboards, animatics and storytelling.
In accordance to the National Qualifications Framework the student will achieve the following learning outcomes after completing the course:
The student is expected to have a basic understanding of
- principles of classical animation
- how to use technologies and tools for animation production
- storytelling in animation
- how ideas can be visualized through a storyboard and an animatic
- how to edit moving image and work with sound
The student is expected to be able to
- create a simple sequence of drawn animation
- use software as a tool for drawn animation
- tell a short story through storyboard
- edit a simple sequence of drawn animation
- develop a visual concept
The student is expected to be able to
- use drawings as a form of expression in animation
- understand foundations of the animation craft
Students work on assignments consisting of making drawn animation. Often students will learn in a workshop setting with an end product. They also work on storyboard and animatic assignments, and learn to edit sound and moving image. Students will work both individually and in groups, and will be given guidance by a teacher.
Deliver an evaluation of the course. This evaluation will be conducted anonymously.
Grading will be done in accordance with the Regulations governing admission, studies and examinations at Volda University College.
The course will be evaluated in accordance with the University College’s routines for quality assurance.
