ANI161 Animation 1: Basics of animation - 2D/cartoons

The course provides an introduction to the basic animation principles in 2D animation (drawn animation). Through short exercises, students will learn to use line testing and create an animatic. Students will also be introduced to basic layout and receive basic training in digital software for 2D animation film. Additionally, students will receive a basic introduction to the use of equipment for sound recording and editing software.
The course also provides an introduction to principles of artistic composition, character design and conventional storytelling in animation.
In accordance to the National Qualifications Framework the student will achieve the following learning outcomes after completing the course:
The students will have a basic understanding of
- principles of movement in animation
- how to use a computer program for animation production and how to edit image and sound
- principles of composition, character design and conventional storytelling in animation
- how ideas can be visualized through a storyboard and an animatic
The students will be able to
- create a simple sequence of 2D animation
- use digital software for 2D animation
- edit a simple sequence of 2D animation
- develop an idea into a film concept
The students will be able to
- use drawings as a form of expression in animation
- use dramaturgial tools in storytelling
Students work on assignments consisting of making 2D animation on paper, 2D animation with digital software, and digital cut-out animation (After Effects). They also work on assignments involving the use of storyboard and animatic, and learn to edit sound and image. Students will work individually and in groups, and will be given guidance by a teacher. The students shall during the course make.:
- 5 or more 2d animation exercises on paper
- 2 or more storyboard exercises
- an animatic
- 2 or more 2D animation exercises in computer
- an edited film sequence with sound
These works shall be delivered in a folder exam.

Grading will be done in accordance with the Regulations governing admission, studies and examinations at Volda University College.
The course will be evaluated in accordance with the University College’s routines for quality assurance.
