ANI162 Animation 2: 3D animation - Stop-motion and CGI
The course provides an introduction to stop-motion puppet animation and 3D computer animation. The goal is to offer the students the basic tools and skills within these techniques, thereby letting them see different possibilities with animation. Students will also learn traditional and digital cut-out animation, and to use camera equipment. The course consists of workshops and practical exercises.
In accordance to the National Qualifications Framework the student will achieve the following learning outcomes after completing the course:
Students will have a basic knowledge of
- traditional (stop-motion) cut-out animation
- digital cut-out software (After Effects)
- stop-motion puppet animation
- digital software for 3D computer animation
- how to differentiate between, and what characterizes, different traditional animation techniques
Students will have basic skills in
- making paper puppets and set for traditional cut-out animation, and animating these
- animating a puppet (stop-motion)
- using camera equipment and associated stop-motion animation software
- carrying out a small project through the use of 3D computer animation
- animating digital characters and building and lighting simple sets in Autodesk Maya
- adjusting to different traditional animation techniques
Students will be able to
- work independently within their craft
- collaborate in a group project
Students learn to use techniques and software, and then work on practical animation tasks, both independently and in groups. A supervisor will guide them. During the semester, students must have completed:
- animation exercises with puppet
- a short project in 3D computer animation
- a short project in traditional cut-out animation
- animation exercises in digital cut-out
These works must be collected in a portfolio for examination.
Deliver an evaluation of the course. This evaluation will be conducted anonymously.
Grading will be done in accordance with the Regulations governing admission, studies and examinations at Volda University College.
The course will be evaluated in accordance with the University College’s routines for quality assurance.
