ENG203 Litteratur og film
Year course in English or equivalent (60 credits)
The course provides an exploration of the similarities and differences between literature and film as artistic forms. It does so primarily by comparing original works of literature with their subsequent adaptation(s) into film, but it also takes at least one event, myth or story and investigates how and why this has been adapted and reflected differently in each of these two media. As a consequence, students will come to understand how and why filmic adaptions differ from their literary equivalents. Texts and films will be selected from different historical periods and from across the English-speaking world in order to demonstrate how these two media are not solely defined or constrained by their two separate sets of artistic techniques, but that they are also influenced by the historical, social and cultural environment from which they emerge and with which they engage.

After completing the course, the student should be familiar with:
- similarities and differences between literature and film as artistic forms
- adaptations of literary works in film
- the influence of historical, social and cultural contexts upon individual films, original works of literature, and their adaptations
After completing the course, the student is able to:
- analyse the structure and artistic techniques of a selection of literary works and films
- understand how and why filmic adaptations differ from their literary sources
After completing the course, the student is able to:
- discuss individual works of literature and film, as well as the relationship between them, using the standard terms developed in literary studies and film studies
- write and talk persuasively and effectively about literature and film in academic English
Teaching is provided through lectures, discussions and individual supervision. Teaching will take the form of 12 three-hour classes a week.
Each student must give a short oral presentation, individually or in groups. Each student must also submit a first draft of the individual written essay. The topic for the essay is to be chosen together with, and approved by, the course lecturer. Each student has the right to one individual meeting with their supervisor, and to receive written feedback on their first draft. Both work requirements must be submitted within the deadline provided at the beginning of the term, and both need to be accepted before the student may sit for the exam.
