Required prerequisite knowledge

Minimum 70 credits, consisting of 60 credits foundation courses in English (ENG 141, 142, 143 and 144 or equivalent) + a specialization level course of 10-15 credits (ENG 200, 201 or equivalent). Students can take ENG 211 in parallel with the required specialization level course, but this is not recommended.

Course content

The course consists of an individual written paper of 7000 - 9000 words. The list of references and any appendices will not be included in the word count. The paper is to be written in English.

In accordance with the national qualification framework, the student has achieved the following learning outcomes after completing the course:

  • The student possesses detailed knowledge of a selected language topic

  • The student can explore the chosen topic based on a research question developed in cooperation with a supervisor

Working and learning activities

The student will, in consultation with the supervisor, select topic, hypothesis and delimitation for the paper. A supervisor will be appointed for each student. The supervisor will provide support through the process. It is a requirement that the student works independently.

Assessment requirements
  • The student has to submit an overview of topic, research question and a first draft for a literature list within a set deadline at the beginning of the semester.
  • The student must attend two - to three scheduled supervision sessions with the appointed supervisor (these may also be online or by telephone). 
  • Before the second supervision session, the student must submit a first draft of minimum 1500 words + reading list/list of references
  • Students must comply with deadlines

Evaluation

The course will be evaluated in accordance with the Volda University College quality assurance system.
