Learning and Assessment
The research group is working on research related to the theme of learning and assessment in educational research. Research studies are based on various approaches to study learning and assessment in primary school, secondary school, and higher education. Research studies are conducted through a collaboration between faculty members from the different departments within HVO, in addition to collaborating with national and international researchers. An important purpose of this interdisciplinary research group is to strengthen knowledge about learning processes and assessment actions in various educational contexts and subjects.
Activities
The research group has monthly meetings. In addition, various sub-groups conducting research projects have meetings based on tasks. Members of the research group are active in both research and development work and participate in school development projects. Both theoretical and empirical studies are conducted. Numerous research articles have been published by members of the group over the past few years, and several members have articles in peer-review process. Members of the research group also annually participate in an international workshop seminar; "Systematic observation in educational research". This is organized together with several other researchers in Europe. In the autumn of 2022, members of the group organized the annual gathering where researchers from eight countries participated. The gathering was digital, and guest lecturers were from the USA and Finland.
Project
The research group conducts studies on assessment, feedback, and learning processes in primary school, secondary school, and teacher education. Both qualitative, quantitative, and mixed methods studies are used in our research projects, and we use classroom research. Methods we use include questionnaires, interviews, think-aloud protocols, and video observations. Members of the research group are currently working with various research and development projects:
"Artificial Intelligence for Assessment for Learning" (AI4AfL). This is a newly started project with funding from The Research Council of Norway. It is a collaborative project between Østfold University College, Volda University College, the municipality of Halden, and Hypatia Learning AS. In this project, we study assessment for learning using artificial intelligence as a starting point to strengthen learning and teaching in secondary school.
"Experiences with assessment and feedback in higher education". This is a research project with the aim of gaining more knowledge about teacher students' and teacher educators' perceptions and experiences with assessment in primary school teacher education.
"Teacher students and teacher educators' understanding and experience with artificial intelligence in teaching and learning". This is a research project carried out in collaboration with researchers at the University of Melbourne and the University of Oslo, where one goal is to gain more knowledge about students and primary school teachers' experiences.
Previously, we have among other things had studies on:
"Feedback for learning in primary school". This is a subproject from DigiHand; a research project that received funding from The Research Council of Norway (2018-2022).
"Creativity and assessment for wellbeing in school - teacher students' perceptions and experiences". This study investigates a selection of primary school teacher students' perceptions and experiences about how creativity and assessment for wellbeing can promote learning in school.
"Digital learning and assessment in secondary school". In this project, we studied students and teachers' experiences with learning and assessment in a digital context.
"Responsive pedagogy". In this project, we studied how feedback interactions can strengthen students' mastery expectations, self-regulated learning, and feedback competence.
