About

This programme allow students to specialise in one or more specific areas within English studies. The programme can be incorporated into a variety of bachelor degrees (such as the BA in Language and LIterature at Volda University College) and can help the student qualify for master studies at universities and university colleges (such as the MA in Written Cultures at Volda University College). The programme also provides relevant competence for the teaching of English in schools, if it is combined with a teacher training programme or PPU (practical pedagogical training). Admission to the PPU-programme requires an MA.

Learning outcome

In accordance with the national qualification framework, the student will have acquired the following learning outcomes upon completing the programme:

Learning outcome knowledge

Upon completing the programme, the student will have knowledge about

  • one or two selected fields within English language and/or literature, culture and society
  • central theories and issues within that field
Learning outcome skills

Upon completing the programme, the student will be able to

  • analyse and interpret linguistic and/or literary expressions in a critical way
  • give an academic, oral presentation on topic(s) within the field of study
  • write independent, academic texts in English
  • discuss theoretical approaches to language and/or literature
Learning outcome qualification

Upon completing the programme, the student will be able to

  • develop their knowledge of a specific field in English studies
  • improve their ability to work independently
Content structure

The programme consists of two 15-credit 200-level courses, one in language (ENG207) and one in literature, culture and society (ENG203). Alternatively, students can combine one taught course with a bachelor paper (ENG211/213). One taught course will be offered each term: the language course in the autumn and the culture course in the spring. The bachelor paper builds on a 200-level course within the same discipline. ENG 211/213 may be taken in parallel with the taught course upon which it builds, or it can be written afterwards. Our general recommendation is that students complete the taught course before commencing the bachelor paper.

Instruction is provided through lectures, group work and individual supervision.
