Course content

The course provides a basic introduction to English grammar and lexicology, with emphasis on morphology, syntax and vocabulary.

Learning outcome

In accordance with the national qualification framework, the students has accquired the following learning outcomes upon completing the course:

Learning outcome knowledge

Knowledge about:

- English morphology, with particular emphasis on the verbal and nominal systems

- English syntax- the relationship between form and meaning in English grammar

- central concepts within English lexicology, etymology and word formation

Learning outcome skills

The student is able to:

- identify and analyse elements of English language usage on different levels

- reflect on the effect of a variety of grammatical structures

- use their knowledge about English grammar to improve their English language usage

- analyse and discuss the use of words in English and their relation to meaning and style

Learning outcome qualification

The student is able to write acceptable academic English

The student is able to use knowledge and skills with some degree of independence, reflection and critical thinking

Working and learning activities

Teaching takes the form of net-lessons. These will involve a combination of written and/or oral lectures. All the material will be posted online for students to access in their own time. The course also includes work requirements with individual feedback.The students may be asked to participate in coversation groups online. Thus, they need to have access to a computer microphone and a web-camera.

Assessment requirements

Each student must submit two short written assignments (overall word count not relevant). Both of these must be passed for a student to sit for the final exam. A student whose assignment is not accepted will get one chance to resubmit. The assignments must be submitted within a deadline posted ate the start of the semester.

The course will be evaluated in accordance with the University College’s routines for quality assurance.Tuition fees and examination fees:The tuition fee is 4000 NOK. The student may either sit the school exam on campus free of charge, or at another, approved location that is more convenient. To take advantage of this second option, the student must pay an additional 1500NOK examination fee.
