The study programme offers an education in language and literature from the Nordic and English language areas, and provides insight into contemporary and past language and literature. The student can choose to emphasise Norwegian (Nordic) or English, and can specialise in topics within language or literature.The study programme has distinct learning objectives depending on the courses chosen by the student. With specialisation within Nordic language and literature, the programme provides entrace qualifications for the Master's study in Nynorsk Written Culture at Volda University College and other relevant Master's programmes at colleges and universities in Norway and abroad. With specialisation in English, the programme provides entrance qualifications for relevant Master's programmes in Norway and abroad. A Master's degree containing a school subject (such as Norwegian or English) is required for admission to the one year course in educational theory and practice (PPU), and will with together with this provide teaching qualifications for the educational system. Students who aim to teach in the school subjects Norwegian and English need a certain minimum of both literary and linguistic courses. The programme also provides qualifications for other types of employment in which laguage- and/or text- or cultural qualifications are needed. This may include public relations, the press, publishing, library and archive work, as well as work on an international or cross-cultural level.
In accordance with the national qualifications framework, the student will have the following learning outcomes after completed course:
* The student must demonstrate knowledge of language, literature and culture within the Nordic and/or the English language area.
* The student must demonstrate knowledge of central methods in language- or literary reseach.
* The student must be able to analyse linguistic and literary expressions independently and critically.
* The student must be able to produce academic texts in Norwegian and/or English language.
The student can choose between Nordic and English specialisation. Ex fac (HUM101) is an obligatory part of the Bachelor's degree in Language and Literature, and is offered in the autumn semester. HUM 101 is suggested to be taken in the 1. semester, but the student can request for it to be moved to the 3. or 5. seemester instead. 60 credits on 100 (basic) level and 30 credits on 200 (specialised) level is obligatory in the study in which the student chooses to specialise (Norwegian or English). These 60 credits on 100-level must in content correspond to a year course in the subject in question.

Students are encouraged to take a semester abroad, for example at the Norwegian Study Centre in Great Britain or at another partner institution abroad. Students should have 60 credits in the subject they want to study abroad before going.
